Molly Swain

As both a painter and sculptor, I use the world around me as my subject, intentionally simplifying forms, editing down to the essence and gesture, only leaving what I believe are the essential structures. I am interested in the language and process of perception. I strive to draw the viewer’s attention to the power in everyday scenes and subjects. I use a variety of media to achieve a sense of strength and power in my work and allow the materials to be at the forefront of what I am depicting. I use texture and color and line to emphasize meaning and exaggerate my subject. In my work, the construction remains visible so that the process reflects the final product and the material itself celebrated. It is my goal as an artist to observe and transcribe the world around me, such that the viewer will have a new relationship with the subject.
